How to Look Up a Court Case in Barron County?
The Barron County Clerk of Circuit Court is the central repository for all circuit court case records. The office manages filings for criminal, civil, family, small claims, and traffic matters and assists the public in accessing those records. Its staff are not permitted to provide legal advice, but they can help requesters navigate the records system.

There are five ways to request records from the Clerk of Circuit Court:
- In person – Visit the office during business hours. A public access terminal is available for self-service case lookups.
- Phone – Call (715) 537-6265 to make payment arrangements before requesting copies.
- Fax – Send a written request to (715) 537-6269. A flat $2.00 fax transmittal fee applies to all fax document requests.
- Email – Send a written request to Sharon.Millermon@wicourts.gov.
- Mail – Send a written request to the address above. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of documents.
All requests should identify the case as specifically as possible, including the names of the parties and the case number. If a case number is not available, the Clerk will conduct a search for a $5.00 search fee under Wis. Stat. § 814.61(11). Copies cost $1.25 per page under Wis. Stat. § 814.61(10), and certified copies carry an additional $5.00 fee per document under Wis. Stat. § 814.61(5)(a).
For online searches, the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (WCCA) portal allows anyone to search Barron County circuit court cases by name, case number, or other identifiers at no charge. Note that confidential case types are not viewable through the WCCA.
Are Court Records Public in Barron County?
Wisconsin’s commitment to open government is codified in the Wisconsin Public Records Law, Wis. Stat. §§ 19.31–19.39, which establishes that members of the public are entitled to the greatest possible information about government affairs. Under this law, most court records in Barron County are presumptively open and available for inspection and copying.
However, the law recognizes several categories of records that are either restricted or subject to redaction:
- Records involving minors and juvenile delinquency proceedings are confidential under Wisconsin law. Only individuals authorized by statute may access juvenile court files.
- Cases sealed by court order for privacy reasons are not available to the public.
- Sensitive victim information in criminal cases, such as contact details or identifying information for vulnerable victims, may be redacted.
- Mental health commitment proceedings and related records carry restricted access.
- Confidential family law matters may have limited public availability.
- Paternity records remain confidential until paternity has been legally established.
- A search warrant is confidential until the warrant has been executed.
Any person who believes a records request has been improperly denied may challenge the denial through Wisconsin’s court system. Government agencies subject to the Public Records Law must respond to requests within a reasonable time.
Barron County Criminal Court Records
Criminal matters in Barron County are heard by the Barron County Circuit Court. Felony charges, misdemeanors originating in circuit court, and related criminal filings are all maintained by the Clerk of Circuit Court. Records typically include charging documents, case summaries, court rulings, sentencing information, and dispositions.
The fastest way to search criminal court records is through the WCCA online portal, which provides free public access to circuit court case details statewide, including those from Barron County. Searches can be conducted by party name or case number.
For arrest information and law enforcement records, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department maintains an online Records Division that publishes current jail information. The following resources are available directly through the Sheriff’s Department:

Barron County Civil Court Records
The Barron County Circuit Court handles all civil matters, including contract disputes, property claims, small claims cases, garnishments, and other civil filings. The Clerk of Circuit Court is the custodian of these records. Civil case information is searchable through the WCCA portal at no cost.
For copies of civil court documents, requesters must pay the statutory fees: $1.25 per page for regular copies and an additional $5.00 for certified documents. Written requests submitted by fax include a $2.00 transmittal fee.
The Barron County Circuit Court also hears small claims matters. Self-represented litigants can obtain standardized Pro Se (Self-Representation) Forms directly from the Clerk’s office for a variety of case types, including small claims, restraining orders, name changes, and civil matters generally. These forms are designed to assist individuals navigating the court system without legal representation.
The county’s circuit court fee schedule outlines applicable filing fees for civil actions. Persons with questions about fees or filing procedures should contact the Clerk’s office directly. The Clerk’s staff can clarify administrative procedures but cannot provide legal advice; parties needing legal guidance should contact an attorney or reach the Wisconsin State Bar Lawyer Referral Service at (800) 362-9082.
Barron County Family Court Records
Family court matters in Barron County—including divorce, paternity, child custody, child support, and restraining orders—are handled by the Barron County Circuit Court, with the Family Court Commissioner playing a key initial role. The Commissioner presides over all initial divorce proceedings, conducts uncontested final divorce hearings, and handles all paternity actions through judgment. Contested divorce and paternity cases are resolved by Circuit Court judges.
Divorce records are filed with and maintained by the Clerk of Circuit Court. The WCCA provides online access to divorce case information; physical copies of filed documents are available through the standard request process at $1.25 per page plus the applicable certified copy fee if needed.
When divorcing parties have minor children, the court issues a Parenting Education Order requiring attendance at an educational program. The county’s Parent Education Order and attached options are available through the Clerk’s office. The program is offered through UW-Extension Barron County, which can be reached at (715) 788-6217.
Marriage and divorce certificates are also available through two additional channels beyond the Clerk’s office:
- Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Public Health: Mail a completed Wisconsin Marriage Records Application Form or Wisconsin Divorce Records Application Form along with payment and a valid photo ID to: Division of Public Health, P.O. For domestic violence matters, Barron County residents can file for restraining orders through the Circuit Court. Pro se restraining order forms are available from the Clerk’s office. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the county’s Health and Human Services department also provide supportive resources for domestic violence victims.
Birth and death certificates relevant to family legal proceedings—such as probate claims, child custody matters, or inheritance disputes—can be obtained using the Wisconsin Birth Records Application Form or the Wisconsin Death Records Application Form, each available through the DPH. Both carry the same fee structure of $20.00 for the first copy and $3.00 per additional copy, and are also obtainable through the Barron County Register of Deeds.
Barron County Probate Court Records
Probate proceedings in Barron County are administered by the Barron County Register in Probate, an appointed position under the Circuit Court judges. The Register in Probate manages estate administrations, wills, adult and minor guardianships, protective placements, civil mental commitments, drug and alcohol commitment proceedings, adoptions, and termination of parental rights cases. The Clerk of Juvenile Court also files and maintains records within this division.
The probate office holds estate records dating back to approximately 1874. Access and search procedures vary by era:
- Records prior to 1985 (back to 1874): Must be searched using the physical Index Book available at the Register in Probate Office in the Barron County Justice Center. Begin searches before 3:30 p.m., as the office closes at 4:30 p.m.
- Records from 1985 to present: Searchable online through the Wisconsin Court System’s case lookup tool via WCCA.
- Records prior to 1947: Many have been transferred to the Wisconsin State Historical Society or the University of Wisconsin–Stout.
Probate records are open to the public at no charge for self-directed searches. If staff assistance is required, a $4.00 search fee applies. Copies of filed documents cost $1.00 per page.
Wills must be filed with the probate office within 30 days of a decedent’s death. To file a claim against an estate in formal probate, claimants should use standard state form PR-1819 – Claim Against Estate, available from the probate office. Informal probate proceedings must be closed within 12 months of the application to open the estate.
For guardianships, the Register in Probate oversees both adult and minor guardianship proceedings. Barron County also operates a Volunteer Guardian Program, established in 2005, which recruits and trains community members to serve as court-appointed guardians when family members are unable to fulfill that role. Since the program’s inception, it has served 45 individuals in need of a guardian and enrolled more than 30 volunteer guardians.
