Jefferson County sits in southeastern Wisconsin with its county seat in the city of Jefferson. The county’s Circuit Court, operating through four branches, handles the full range of criminal, civil, family, traffic, and probate matters. Several municipal courts within the county — in Fort Atkinson, Lake Mills, Watertown, Jefferson, Oakland, and Palmyra — adjudicate local ordinance violations. The Clerk of Courts Office at the Jefferson County Courthouse serves as the central repository for circuit court case files, while the Register of Deeds handles vital records and the Register in Probate manages estate and guardianship filings.
Wisconsin offers several paths for locating court records, including in-person visits to the clerk’s office, mail requests, and electronic tools. The Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (WCCA) platform provides free online searches of circuit court case information across the state. Additionally, WisconsinCourts.us may help users find publicly available case data and connect with appropriate court resources. Public access terminals at the courthouse and direct contact with the Clerk of Courts are also available for those who prefer to research records on-site.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Jefferson County?
There are three primary ways to search for a Jefferson County court case: online through WCCA, in person at the courthouse, or by submitting a written request.
Online Search via WCCA
The Wisconsin Circuit Court Access website allows anyone to search case records by party name, date of birth, case number, or county. Search results display party names, case type, charges, case status, and scheduled hearings. WCCA covers most case types filed in Wisconsin circuit courts. Dismissed or acquitted misdemeanor and felony cases display for two years, while other case types remain visible for the full retention period of the case file.

Are Court Records Public in Jefferson County?
The Wisconsin Open Records Law (Wis. Stat. § 19.31–19.39) establishes a strong presumption of public access to government records, including court documents. Under this statute, any person has the right to inspect records held by state and local government entities unless a specific exemption applies.
In Jefferson County, most circuit court filings — including complaints, motions, orders, judgments, transcripts, and docket entries — are open to public inspection and copying. Certain records, however, are restricted or sealed:
- Juvenile records — Proceedings involving minors are confidential under Wisconsin law.
- Records sealed by court order — A judge may seal records to protect privacy, ongoing investigations, or other compelling interests.
- Attorney-client privileged communications — Protected from disclosure.
- Trade secrets and proprietary information — Exempt from production.
- Law enforcement investigative records — Files that could compromise active investigations are withheld.
- Records that would invade personal privacy — Personal identifiers and sensitive information may be redacted.
- Records relating to pending litigation or pre-execution contracts — May be temporarily withheld.
The Wisconsin Court System also governs how long case records remain available online through WCCA. Criminal case files are retained by the Clerk of Courts for varying periods based on severity: Class A felony files for 75 years after final judgment, all other felony files for 50 years, and misdemeanor files for 20 years. A complete schedule of retention periods is available in Supreme Court Rule 72.
Redaction of protected information — such as Social Security numbers — is required before records are released. If you believe a record has been improperly withheld, the Open Records Law provides a process for challenging denials.
